Screen vessels and companies with the Compliance & Risk Check
The Compliance & Risk Check on every vessel and company profile gives one risk status, the findings behind it, and a PDF report you can keep on file.
4 min walkthrough of sanctions risk and due diligenceThe Compliance & Risk Check screens a vessel or a company against sanctions lists and a set of risk signals, such as port calls in sanctioned jurisdictions, identity changes, port state control detentions and missing P&I cover. It sums them up in one risk status, lists each finding with its details, and lets you export the result as a PDF report.
It is on every vessel profile, and on its own tab of every owner and manager profile.

Who uses it
- Compliance and KYC teams screen a vessel or counterparty before a fixture, a port call or a payment, and keep the PDF as evidence.
- Chartering and operations teams check a vessel before it is nominated.
- Agents and suppliers check who they are about to work with.
Risk statuses
Three statuses are shown as a label, in a banner at the top of the profile, as a badge next to the name and in large type in the check:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Sanctioned | The vessel or company is named on an active sanctions list, or a vessel’s registered owner is. Dealings may be prohibited, or need a licence, in the jurisdictions listed. |
| High risk | Several significant risk indicators were found, for example repeated calls at ports in sanctioned jurisdictions, frequent flag and MMSI changes, a black-listed flag and a recent detention. Enhanced due diligence is recommended before any dealing. |
| Elevated risk | Some risk indicators were found. Review the findings and confirm the position with the counterparty. |
A vessel can be Sanctioned without being on a list itself: the status sentence then says, for example, “This vessel is not itself named on any active sanctions list, but its registered owner is a sanctioned party.” High risk and Elevated risk are risk assessments, not sanctions listings.
Every other vessel or company has no label, no banner and no badge. The sentence at the top of the check tells you which result it is:
| The check says | What it means | Export PDF |
|---|---|---|
| “Only minor indicators were identified. Standard due diligence applies.” | A few minor findings, listed below the sentence | Yes |
| “No risk indicators were identified in the checks listed below. Standard due diligence applies.” | Nothing of concern was found | No |
If MagicPort has no screening record for a vessel or company, that does not mean it is free of risk. Screen it another way, for example with Sanctions Search.
Note: The Compliance & Risk Check is a screening result, not a legal clearance. Each finding shows its data source and when it was last updated, and MagicPort has not independently verified the data published by those sources. It is one input to your compliance process, not a substitute for it.
Where you see the status
- A coloured Compliance status banner at the top of the profile, with See details, and a badge next to the vessel or company name. Both appear only for Sanctioned, High risk and Elevated risk.
- The Compliance Status card on the right of a vessel profile, or on a company’s Overview tab, with a one-sentence summary and Show details. It is shown for every vessel and company.
- A warning icon before the vessel name in result lists, such as Scheduled Arrivals, Nearby Vessels, Vessel Search and your fleets.

Risk icons in vessel lists
In the table view of any vessel list, a warning icon before the vessel name shows its status at a glance. Hover over the icon to see the status.
| Icon | Status |
|---|---|
| Red warning icon | Sanctioned |
| Orange warning icon | High risk |
| Yellow warning icon | Elevated risk |
| No icon | No significant risk: minor indicators or none |

Click the vessel name to open its profile and see the findings behind the icon. To remove risky vessels from the list, turn on Hide risky vessels above the table.
Vessel checks
Only the checks with something to report are listed, so a clean vessel shows only a few rows. Click a row to see the details behind it.
| Check | What it looks at |
|---|---|
| Vessel sanctions list | Whether the vessel itself is designated, with each authority, programme and listing date, and the stated reasons |
| Sanctioned owner | Whether its registered owner, ISM manager or commercial manager is a sanctioned party, with that company’s designations |
| Linked sanctioned vessels | Other sanctioned vessels run by the same owner or manager, and the lists that name them |
| Port call history | Port calls involving high-risk jurisdictions subject to US, EU and UK sectoral sanctions, over the last 6, 12 or 24 months |
| Vessel identity changes | Changes of name, flag, MMSI, call sign, owner, manager or class society, and whether any changed two or more times in the last 24 months |
| Class society | Whether its class was withdrawn by an IACS society, for example when it moved to a society outside IACS |
| P&I insurance | Whether a P&I insurance record was found |
| Flag performance | How the flag is rated by the Paris MoU (white, grey or black list) and the Tokyo MoU |
| Port-state control | Port state control inspections in the last 24 months, deficiencies and grounds for detention |
| Detentions | Each detention, how long it lasted and the deficiencies behind it |
| Recurring deficiencies | Deficiencies inspectors raised more than once in the last 24 months |
Note: “No P&I insurance record found” may be a real gap in cover, or only mean that MagicPort’s sources have no record. Confirm cover with the owner, manager, P&I club or broker.
Company checks
A company’s status comes from its own sanctions record and from the vessels it owns or manages. Sanctioned fleet shows how many of its vessels are sanctioned or high risk; click it to list them with their role and status.

PDF reports
Click Export PDF to download the check as a branded PDF report, with your own reference number and notes. It is available whenever the check has findings: Sanctioned, High risk, Elevated risk, or “Only minor indicators were identified”.

Frequently asked questions
How often is the check updated? The Screened date and time at the bottom of the check shows when it was last run.
Can I be told when a vessel’s sanctions status changes? Yes. Create an alert with the Sanction Status Change trigger. See Alert on sanctions or identity changes.
Why is there no Export PDF button? The check found no risk indicators (“No risk indicators were identified in the checks listed below”), so there is nothing to report.
Can I hide risky vessels from a list? Yes. Turn on Hide risky vessels above any vessel list. See Work with search results.
