Check a vessel for compliance risk
Open a vessel's Compliance & Risk Check, read its risk status and see the findings behind it.
4 min walkthrough of sanctions risk and due diligenceThe Compliance & Risk Check on a vessel profile in Maritime Intelligence tells you whether a vessel is sanctioned or carries other risk, such as port calls in sanctioned jurisdictions, frequent identity changes, detentions or no P&I cover. It takes a minute and gives you a status, the evidence behind it, and a PDF you can keep on file.
Open the vessel profile
Click Vessel Intelligence in the top navigation, then Vessel Search. Type the vessel’s name, IMO or MMSI number and press Enter, then click the vessel’s name.
Tip: Search by IMO number. Sanctioned vessels often change name, but keep their IMO.
In any vessel list, such as Scheduled Arrivals, a red, orange or yellow warning icon before a vessel’s name already tells you it is Sanctioned, High risk or Elevated risk. Hover over the icon to see which.
Read the status at the top
If a risk was found, a Compliance status banner runs across the top of the profile and a badge sits next to the vessel’s name: Sanctioned, High risk or Elevated risk. Click See details to jump to the check.

No banner and no badge means no significant risk was found. The check further down the page says whether there were minor indicators or none at all.
Scroll to Compliance & Risk Check
The check shows the status in large type with one line on what it means, then one row per finding. Only the checks with something to report are listed.

What each status and each check means is explained in Screen vessels and companies with the Compliance & Risk Check.
Open a finding to see the details
Click a row to expand it:
- Vessel sanctions list shows the stated reasons and a table of designations with the Authority, Programme and the date it was Listed.
- Sanctioned owner shows the designations of the sanctioned owner or manager, and Linked sanctioned vessels lists the other sanctioned vessels it runs.
- Port call history lists the port calls involving high-risk jurisdictions. Choose 6m, 12m or 24m to change the period.
- Vessel identity changes lists each change with the old and new value and the date.
- Port-state control and Detentions list each inspection and deficiency, and mark the ones logged as grounds for detention.

Check the owner and managers
A vessel’s risk is often in who runs it. In Ownership, expand a company and click its name to open its profile, then its Compliance & Risk Check tab. See Check a company for compliance risk.
Keep a record
Click Export PDF to download the check as a report for your files, with your own reference number and notes. See Export a compliance report as PDF.
Note: The Screened date at the bottom shows when the check was last run. It is a screening result, not a legal clearance.
